While April 24th, 2019 #FederationDay marked 129 years of GFWC, this week also saw the 151st anniversary of the club that started it all: Sorosis. On April 20, 1868 the first meeting of Sorosis was held by Jane Cunningham Croly in the famed Delmonico’s Restaurant. The occasion marked not only the first official gathering of a professional woman’s club within the United States, but also the first major public gathering of women unescorted by men in a restaurant.
